MY STORY
On December 26, 2018, my best “old man” Kody turned 15 and half years old! Given that a Portuguese Water Dog’s life expectancy is approximately 13 years, every single day was, and still is, truly a gift with him. Three months prior to that, he had developed CCD (Canine Cognitive Dysfunction) which I lovingly call doggie dementia. His sleep cycle had reversed and he was up every night starting at 2:30/3:00 AM wandering the house in a ritualistic pattern, pacing and generally confused. My husband and I took turns monitoring him as he was quite unsteady and we were losing lots of sleep as we couldn’t get him to settle back down. We tried him on Diazepam (Valium) but, even at the lowest dose, he could not even stand up and was so agitated that it was dangerous for him to try to move.
